Special

Went back to Muar again. I just couldn’t resist of meeting up with her. We had our lunch together with her brother (but he turned up a bit late, so I had a few minutes just with her). We brought each other’s photos, and talked about things. I gave her a box of Ferrero Rocher chocolate and she gave me the VERY SPECIAL belated birthday presents…then we ate our lunch, talked…talked…

Engaged

My engagement date with Ija has been fixed to be on 20 March 2005. I had decided to give her something extra special in addition to what we (me and family) already bought. I burned 2 sets of CD’s for her. One is a Zikir Munajat CD by Ustaz Dr. Badrul Amin Bahron so that she can listen to Al Qur’an recitals and praise God while she was driving. The other set consists of 3 cd’s, having 17 songs on each cd. The songs varied from the oldies to the current hits, such as Abba’s Lay All Your Love On Me, Richard Marx’s Right Here Waiting, Maroon 5’s She Will Be Loved, Kelly Clarkson’s Breakaway, Extreme’s More Than Words, Titanic’s My Heart Will Go On, Berlin’s Take My Breath Away and Hoobastank’s The Reason. The 51 songs came from my years of CD collections. I also created the CD cover myself, something that I learned to do by trial and error.

All the invited guests showed up at one of the biggest days in my life. A few of my aunties, uncles and cousins. It was a commemorative day plus great foods from both parties. As much as I would like to say more, let it just be in my memory box.

Sepet and Malaysian production

09 to 19 March 2005 – Went for Sepet, a local movie that has garnered international interests ; having won an award and been invited to a few international film festivals. As for me, this would be my third time of watching a Malay movie at the cinema during my adult years. I have nothing against Malay movies, not really. It’s just that for a majority of cases – the stories are so predictable and revolve around the same matter (usually about college kids who never actually study but just concentrate on their puppy love), the acting is hideous while the scrip is weak and make you want to puke since you know people don’t actually say those things in real life.

As for our dramas on tv, I notice that in almost every production, there’ll always be one character who likes to spread lies around, i.e. bad-mouthing somebody. Be it a mother in law, a neighbour or a village’s gossip queen. I mean, come on ok…everybody knows that spreading lies like that (even if there’s an element of truth inside the story) is a sin. In fact, in Islam, the sin is the same as killing/eating your own brothers and sisters. Everytime I see a drama with this character, I get all emotional and feel like slapping the person’s face (especially if the ‘victim’ is so weak). So, before I get a heart attack out of this, I might as well watch US tv series that don’t really rely on gossip kings/queens to make them big. Or, I just do something else more productive like reading or writing. What do you guys think?

Back to local movies - I don’t really mind catching a Malay movie if it’s out of the ordinary and they actually took the effort in creating a masterpiece. As for Sepet, it really deserves two thumbs up. The acting and the script are marvellous and natural (after all, these two factors need each other). Very well directed, the lives of two families are interwoven to become an interesting plot. The movie reflects the culture of Malay and Chinese people brilliantly, without the need for exaggeration. Also, for the first time, the cinema hall is packed with people from all races – Malays, Chinese, Indians and even some Westerners. Check the movie’s website at www.sepet.com.my. A word of caution though – the movie contains some rather steamy scenes that might be offensive to our local taste.

I also went for Robots. For some reasons, I could not help notice a few similarities between Robots and Monsters, Inc. For examples, the crook lady in Robots reminded me of the cop lady doing undercover job in Monsters, Inc. Also, the Boss of the robots factory in Robots reminded me of the Boss of the scare factory in Monsters, Inc. Both companies even had their commercials aired on tv in both movies. Do you have any opinions on this?

Despite of that, I think the movie gives Fox the edge to compete in the animation industry, together with Disney’s, Pixar and Dreamworks. After the successful Ice Age, Fox has done it again. The movie portrays some of the most realistic animation ever created. Go watch it as you won’t regret it.

Other movies that I watch this month – Miss Congeniality 2, White Noise and Hitch are reviewed (along with others) in my website.

CSI

Got myself a boxed set of CSI Dvd Season 4. CSI is one of the greatest tv series of all time, and one of my favourites. Its ratings improved for every new season. The success of the show prompted its producer, Jerry Bruckheimer to come up with two new CSI’s – CSI Miami and CSI NY. Miami is not as interesting as the original Vegas, but the new one NY looks promising. In CSI Vegas, I just love all the characters – Gil, Catherine, Sara, Nick, Warrick, Capt. Jim, Dr. Albert and Greg. The episodes just keep getting better and better. In addition to learning all the science/methods/theories that they use to uncover the mysteries behind every crimes, we also get to know the team and their conflicts.

As for the actress who play Catherine, Marg Helgenberger – she is one of those who has the maternal look but still so sexy. Other actresses whom I think have similar traits – Julianne Moore, Téa Leoni and Diane Lane (sexy hair).

The CSI series somehow prompted me a few curiosities though. In real life, do criminal lab investigators join the police force in interrogating a suspect? Also, do they actually go to investigate a particular place or meet a particular person for questioning without the presence of the police? I hope someone can enlighten me on this matter...thanks

Lemony Snicket’s

Another one of those great children’s books that made it to the silver screen – Lemony Snicket's. Jim Carrey did what he did best – being funny and an amazing actor at the same time. The three young actors who played the Bauedelaires’ children were also not to be left out in bringing the stories (mind you, they combined three books into one movie) to life. Even the ‘supporting’ actors like Meryl Streep and Jude Law added colours to the movie brilliantly.
